What kind of grades do you need to be able to study medicine in Holland? I've got a friend that's now finishing her first year of studying medicine here in Trondheim. She's somewhat of a genius, and she barely made it with her grades. (And her grades were outstanding)

Well, I will explain, but please ask if you do not understand... It's somewhat difficult for foreigners, I'm afraid. In the Netherlands, there are about three different High Schools: the VMBO, the HAVO and the VWO. The VMBO is four years and this school is for people who cannot learn very well. The HAVO takes five years and is for average pupils. And then you have the VWO, which takes six years and is for people who can learn well. If you have VWO you are allowed to go to the university. Of course, it depends on which subjects you took at High School, which studies you are allowed to do. For example, if you didn't took biology classes at the VWO, you cannot study medicine. Usely, if you want to study a subject at the university and you did take the classes you need to be allowed to study this subject, you can. Only, in the Netherlands, there are more people who want to study medicine than "there is room for" (I can't come up with the word that describes it better; I expect you'll understand). Because of that, there's a "loting" (a lotery?)... You get a number based on the marks you got for your final exams. Some numbers get in, others don't. The higher the marks you got for your exams, the more chance you have to get in. If you have an eight or higher (on a scale from 1 to 10) for your final exams, you get in straight away. That's difficult, but I think I'm able to. So, I think perhaps it's not as difficult to get into medical school here as it is with you, but it's certainly not like anybody can get in. A lot of people want to, though. In my class alone, there are about eight people (of fifteen!) who want to. I think only my best friend and I will manage to get an eight, so the rest of them will have to be lucky...

Ah, I see. Good luck to you and WolfGaidin Medicine isn't really something for me. (A tad to lazy for it ) I've finished the norwegian version of "VWO" and I am now in my first year, of two, studying computer-science. After that I'll probably study something else... this computer stuff is just too easy and boring. (wohaa! who ever thought I would call computers boring ) I'll probably be pursuing av master's degree in biologi/chemistry/architecture

Usually, if you want to study a subject at the university and you did take the classes you need to be allowed to study this subject, you can. Only, in the Netherlands, there are more people who want to study medicine than "there is room for" (I can't come up with the word that describes it better; I expect you'll understand). Only a certain amount of students are allowed for some studies, this is called "numerus fixus" (that's latin ) Because of that, there's a "loting" (a lotery?)... This "loting" is called drawing lots. Which is almost the same as lotery.

Thank you, Caleb. I tried once before to do Medicine, but I was not lucky, so I studied biology for a year. At the end of that year, I decided it was not the right study for me, so that's why I'm a postman this year. I hope to be more lucky next schoolyear. My examscore was not so well. I finished my VWO-school with an average score of 6,4... Should have done better, but I was too lazy, I suppose.

Hi Zibje! Erik (WolfGaidin) tried to get in last year, together with me. I got in because of the >8 for my final exams. Unfortunately though, Erik didn't make it through, so he started studying geschiedenis (history?). And well, to cut a long story short, he likes that study so much he didn't try to get into medical school this year. Instead, he will finish history and then probably look for a job. Anyway, that's three years from now, so he hasn't planned everything out yet.
