Did you know that RJ doesn't like fanfiction? I read on some WoT FAQ site that he doesn't like people writing fanfiction about his books at all. He puts up with it, I think, as long as it's nothing sexual. He's says if it is, then he's going to take legal action. I'm not sure if this is true(I've lost the website address and I'm not sure how trustworthy it was), but I hope not. I still refuse to even touch an Anne Rice book because of her vindictive lawsuits against poor, innocent writers who simply wish to see what they would like to happen, happen. I love fanfiction and think it's a great way for people to express their imagination and for future writers(like someone we all know who happens to co-run a Nynaeve website) to excersize their skills and see if it's the right career choice. I did want to express my opinion, but my real reason for posting this is boredom.

I am personally not so fond of fan fic. No matter how good the writer of fan fic can write it is not the real writer. It is not the real story... So i don't read fan fic often.

I didn't actually know that was the case, but I felt something was up because wotmania don't accept serious fanfictions anymore. I feel kind of disappointed in him, too. Fanfiction doesn't do any harm to him, you'd think he might be pleased that his books are inspiring young people to write for themselves.
I forgot to put a disclaimer on mine o.O I think I'll go and change that now...

Well, actually I can understand why he doesn't like it. I mean, I know how I would feel if anyone took some of my characters and wrote a story about them. A story I never meant to happen...
(Actually, this did happen to me, in a way, some years ago. A friend of mine was writing a story and although the names were different, the story was mine! I never said anything about it, though, because she was my friend, but oh! I can still feel angry about it.)
Characters from your own stories are like your babies. If anyone touches them, they touch you!
But hey, I won't pretend I never wrote fanfic... I did, though it never was a serious atempt. And I do enjoy reading the fanfic stories other people wrote, as well. As long as it's about some other story than my own, I do.
But I can understand, as a "writer", why RJ doesn't like it.

yea i guess ur right, ive wrote quite a few fanfics and other stories myself, so i can understsand what he feels.
however he might be against it, because with so many theories flying about, that someone might acutally be right and write a story that is close to the books, and then everyone will be disappointed with the books.

I agree with Creator. Fanfiction is great and is a wonderful way for writers-to-be and others to express their imagination.
I myself, love fanfiction, and I'm truly disappointed that RJ doesn't approve of it. Like Shandy says, it doesn't hurt him in any way, except of course if someone wrote a story very close to a truth in his next books, so when he released his new books, it wouldn't be something new and exciting.
But then again, I can wholly understand that he doesn't like it. It is kind of strange to see your own characters displayed in a totally other setting than in your imagination.
However I must say, even though I understand, I don't think I'll stop reading and writing fanfiction. If he wants me to stop, he'll have to ask me himself.

IMO, fan fiction is OK for TV shows and Movies, because shows/films aren't created and treasured by one person. More than one person shares the credit, and once a show/movie is done with, the people just move on. All my fan fiction is about a TV show, and believe it or not, that show is Star Trek.
With books, though, the author really treasures what s/he has written. I know if I were a published author, I wouldn't want people to write fan fic about my books. Who knows what they'll do with my characters? Kill off a few dozens, get some married, give some a kid or two... the possibilities never end.
I agree with Creator about sharpening skills and seeing whether or not writing could be a career. Though the author should get some artisitc credit by creating and developing characters of their own for true creative experience. *End rant*

If anyone ever wanted to write a fanfic of one of my stories, I don't think I would mind. But that's just a guess...once upon a time when my brother decided to turn one of my stories in to his teacher for extra credit, I was pretty mad.
On this subject while I'm thinking of it......I have a goony habit of re-writing Beatle's songs to fit fantasy stories. For you enjoyment [laugh at my stupidity]...
THE AJAH IS BLACK [Moirane's Song...name that tune]
Oh dear, what can I do? The ajah is black and I’m just a blue Tell me, oh what can I do?
They’re after him and their shawls are black And since he’s the Dragon come back He’s stalked by the black.
Oh dear, what can I do? The ajah is black and I’m just a blue Tell me, oh what can I do?
Just to think of the ways they’ll try to trap him And they only serve the dark one’s whim to destroy him
That woolhead can’t keep himself safe So I can’t afford to make a mistake
Oh dear, what can I do? The ajah is black and I’m just a blue Tell me, oh what can I do?
