Ahh... I agree completely, Frenzy. The Princess Bride was genius. Have you read the book? It's even better, because there's more material. I'm afraid I didn't like 'A Knight's Tale'... the main characters were just too cliché for me. It was a bit too cheesy for my tastes, I'm afraid What about 'The Labyrinth'? Dance, magic dance...

I'd like to add a little more to the debate about Tolkien and Eowyn.
The women of Rohan don't fight not only because Tolkien was a man of the 40's... The Society is based upon the Ango-Saxon model... I mean REALLY closely. In an Anglo-Saxon society women are there to bring joy... to be pretty and sweet and... you know the deal.
For Example...
Theoden (The King of Rohan in case you had forgotten) means Lord in Anglo-Saxon Eowyn - Means Joy of Horses
There are many more examples as well, but these are the most obvious

I just realised...
Once I got on my rant I forgot to add that Return of the King... The film, was fantastic. The best of the three by far.
Rumour has it... and my sources are not always infalliable... that they are going to make The Hobbit too...

Rumour has it... and my sources are not always infalliable... that they are going to make The Hobbit too... I heard so, too, but I'm not sure it's for sure. I mean, PJ definately talked about wanting to film The Hobbit, but since he's busy filming King Kong or something (who wants to see that anyway?) he couldn't start right now and therefore it wasn't sure he would... As I said, I'm not entirely sure about it. Anyway, it might be difficult to contract all the actors. I mean, I thought I read somewhere that Sir Ian McKellen didn't feel like playing Gandalf again... And an entirely new Gandalf would be... strange.

About all the Eowyn arguement: in Anglo-Saxon culture, women didn't typically fight, but they were pretty tough & we do have isolated cases of female soldiers. Also, the beautiful-woman-warrior has long been a part of British lore and literature [example: Spenser's "The Faerie Queen"...this is my first post ever on this site, and you can already see the Brown Ajah in me] ...and Eowyn DID infer that she was a shield maiden and could fight.
As for fantasy movies, my favorite EVER is Edward Scissorhands [which is more fable than fantasy]...I love Ladyhawke as a romance, The Princess Bride as the greatest spoof/tribute ever, and Dragonheart as just plain fun, cheesy sword-and-sorcery.

Spoiler for The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the KingIn The Return of the King, Eowyn dresses herself as a soldier and goes in the army of Rohan/Gondor (don't remember which one, I think Rohan). She kills a Nazgul. So, actually, she did swing a sword. Yay for Eowyn End of spoiler Just a (stupid) question: How was this a spoiler? Everyone who've read the book knows what happened! Btw, if you haven't read Silmarillion, you can't understand the ending (last 20mins) of RotK. Which I find awesome Finally a kick in the ribs for all the stupid idiots who haven't read their Tolkien, I though ;D

Oh yes, but BEWARE --I helped convince one of those "stupid idiots," who'd only seen the movie, to actually read the books, and she now refuses to read anything that doesn't have "LOTR" written on it somewhere. She's read the whole trilogy several times. She won't even give me feedback on the "Top 60 books you might like if you're obsessed with the Lord of the RIngs," list I created for her.
But she still won't appreciate The Simarillion, and is always coming to me with questions about Middle Earth.
Oh yes, and I am QUITE LOOKING FORWARD to watching the King Kong remake.

Won't appreciate Silmarillion? Tsk, tsk Well, it's like his second most nerdish book (Unfinished Tales anyone? ;D), so I can understand that she isn't into it... I loved it, though, but I'm a nerd, sooo....

Yeah. It's like his own little masterpiece. I can only shudder when I think of what it could have become if he'd started writing it a little more detailed a few years before he did... He did after all intend to make everything as detailed as the "Beren and Luthien" story, IIRC...
