Well, the name of the thread says it all: what's your favourite fantasy-movie? Of course "The Two Towers" and "The Fellowship of the Ring" are great! I just can't get enough of them and I can't wait for the last one. Though, my favourite fantasy-movie is "The Dark Crystal". That one is just so wonderful! The first time I watched it, I was like six years old or so. For the next weeks I did not talk about anything else but Jen, Kyra, Fizgig, Aughra and the Skeksis. Not so long ago, my dear lady bought the DVD of "The Dark Crystal" for me. Once more I was astonished about the impact it has on me. It's great! Another fantasy-movie I really like, is "Willow". Yay for Willow!

As of now, no movie can really measure up to the LOTR movies. But I do remember that when I was a little child, I really loved "The Neverending Story" -movies!

Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Dark Crystal, Willow, Merlin... So much to choose from! I'll go with The Fellowship of the Ring, though. And The Two Towers is a (very) close second. Yay, Gollum!

I haven't heard of 'The Dark Crystal'... what is it about? I think I'd really like to see it now!
I loved 'Willow' and I'm Lord of the Rings fixated... does anyone else like 'The Princess Bride' or 'Ladyhawke'? (If Navarre of 'Ladyhawke' didn't have blonde hair, he would BE Lan... he even has a Mandarb!)

I think Erik (WolfGaidin) will explain the story of The Dark Crystal far better than I'd do, so I'll leave that up to him. But what's this Ladyhawke? I never heard of it.

I don't really have a favourite fantasy movie. Well I do like the X-men and I even like other fantay movies like lord of the rings. But my problem with movies made from books is that I find it annoying if it is not the same as the book. And if it really sounds inrealistic. Like in the two Towers, eowyn knows how to fight with a sword, she even says the women are not defenseless. And what do the women do? ?? Sit in a cave, with no way out, as far as they know and wait for the orcs to break through!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you know you are in a hopeless situation than women can also fight. If you ask little boys to fight in the army who have less strenght than a woman. bye isabel

Mjah... Perhaps you're right, Isabel, but you forget two things. First of all, Peter Jackson was just following the book. In the book, the women did not fight, so it would be very strange if they did in the movie. I don't think any of the people who've read the book would have liked that, would have accepted it. In this case, you don't have a problem with the movie, but a problem with the book. That's okay, of course, but you can't use it as an argument against fantasy-movies. So, let's look at the book, then. The women don't fight. Of course, they don't! This book was written in the forties, when women were not equal to men, yet (indeed, I don't know if they are now). When you married, you stopped working. Women were supposed to sit at home, they didn't become soldiers. And Tolkien himself was a very confessional man. Should he write about a nation that approved of women-soldiers? Of course, not! So, why did Eowyn say the women were able to defend themselves? Because she is different. She wants to become a soldier. So, in her eyes, yes, the women can fight. In the other women's eyes, and in the eyes of the men of Rohan, though, this may seem very different.

Well Jackson didn't follow the book, because as far as i remember Eowyn was not swinging around with a sword:))))))) So I believe Tolkien didn't write that women could fight, so it would be less annoying that they didn't fight. ;D bye isabel Ps have you already got an exam?

Eowyn did not swing a sword, perhaps, but she did ask Aragorn to take her with him to fight. So, after a fashion, she did say she could fight. And haven't you read The return of the king? I won't spoiler, because I know some of you haven't read it yet, but if you did read it, you should know better! Exams: yes, music and French... It was difficult, but I think they went well.

Spoiler for The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the KingIn The Return of the King, Eowyn dresses herself as a soldier and goes in the army of Rohan/Gondor (don't remember which one, I think Rohan). She kills a Nazgul. So, actually, she did swing a sword. Yay for Eowyn End of spoiler

Ah, thank Waukeen that spoiler is unreadable. I wouldn't want to know the events of "The Return of the King" without reading it myself.

Well, "The Dark Crystal". I will translate what's on the back of the DVD into English. Thanks to the rays of the Dark Crystal, the Gelflings live in a world of peace and prosperity. When the Crystal breaks by an earthquake, their peacefull lives come to an end. The Skeksis, the arch-enemies of the Gelflings, profit from this situation and try to disharm their enemies. Only Jen, the last of the Gelflings, can save his race, but he is quite young and does not know what evil awaits him...
A fairy adventure-movie from the creators of the Muppet Show.Alright, I got to go working now.

The Dark Crystal is a good one. mmmMMMmmmm.... gelfling! (makes you wonder if Homer Simpson ever watched that movie ;D) Ladyhawke is a fantastic movie, i highly recommend it. One of the first fantasy movies i saw was Excaliber, and it isn't bad (just long). i'm probably one of the few, but i liked Dune. And i know they're cheesy, but i also liked A Knight's Tale and Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet (the one with diCrapio, i know, John Leguizamo & the guy who did a wonderful job playing Mercutio made it worth it)
But the best fantasy movie by far is The Princess Bride.
